At one time, urban areas were a hotbed of manufacturing. Not anymore. In the United States, the little manufacturing that is done is in small—to midsize cities. Large cities are almost exclusively service-oriented. Aliens, especially illegal ones, flock to large cities where they can get lost in the crowds and live off a multitude of assistance programs.
Another aspect that is often underdiscussed is the psychological toll population replacement has on native residents. First, as mentioned in the article, ambitious natives are crowded out of productive cities, denying them economic mobility. This itself is demoralizing. Second, native outmigration seriously strains family and community bonds. Typically entire extended families do migrate from productive cities at the same time. They often scatter in suburbs located on opposite sides of the urban core. Obviously the right-knit communities are destroyed as well.
I wonder how much of relative immigrant economic over performance is due to more cohesive family and community ties. I would also be interested to try to determine how much the white male suicide epidemic in countries like the United States can be explained by immigrant replacement of native populations in cities.
Fascinating article, and matches my personal experience. My wife and I left San Francisco - and took our manufacturing business with us - to rural Oregon in 1992. Already by then the huge influx of illegal Mexicans was at the top of our list of reasons for leaving, especially regarding "Mechanism 2: Behavioral Differences". Loud, dirty, sexually aggressive, violent people are not fun to live around.
