I would argue for more high skilled immigration, and that the current H1B program is a mess. Indeed, everything related to immigration seems to be a mess for western nations.

Under EVERY rock. Unless and until interest groups turn over these rocks, the corruption ALWAYS roots wider, deeper, and holds its grip more tenaciously. Lotsa work for DOGE...

Thanks for your honest assessment of the H1-B program.

"Will America lose its technological edge without H1-B workers?"

I believe you answered the question quite admirably. The answer is no. The H1-B program was always a scheme for higher profits through lower wages. It is a case of the rapacious megalomaniacs wanting even more wealth and, consequently, more power.

I'm glad the AI boom was mentioned. Additionally, if there is a STEM labor shortage, then there's no reason to institute demographic quotas.

The H1B program is both valuable and useful - and exceptionally abusive and used to suppress salaries of American workers. Interestingly the H1B program can be fixed by one simple change - make the H1B holder independent of and not indentured to the employer. As it is, they are stuck with one employer and forced to work crazy hours for a decade or so before they get t heir green card and independence. Allowing a reasonable number of fully transportable H1B visas would fill holes in our employment base - and largely prevent employment abuse of both the US workers and the H1B visa holder themselves.
