This reminds me of a "Seinfeld" episode in which Elaine tells Jerry that women have a more esthetic appearance like "sports cars", while men have a more utilitarian appearance like "pick-up trucks".
There are some other datasets than OKCupid. Would be informative to see if this is just an artifact of OKCupid. As I recall, these ratings tend to take the entire profile into account, not just the photo.
Male ratings of female attractiveness skewed by artful makeup use. Give men pics of most women without makeup and maybe we would seem a more left titled distribution
There is one obvious reason to why women are closer to each other in attractiveness than men: Make-up. Women paint on a mask in order to look more like the Ideal Woman and less like themselves. Men have to show more of their real, physical self. That naturally takes more women closer to the ideal.
It's not that women are "wrong" per se. It's that they have unrealistic beauty standards for men.
For decades we have been told the exact opposite, that mean have too high of standards for women, at exactly the same time beauty standards for women steadily feel and beauty standards for men steadily rose. It was a total inversion of reality
It's weird that almost no men were rated by women a 4 or a 5, and a small percentage even a 3. It almost seems that women were substituting "pretty" for "attractive"?
I guess testosterone has some trade-offs. All those bony extrusions and protruding tendons don't lend someone to being easily attractive. As I've heard it, men are utilities; valued for what they can provide.
Unfortunately, when women don't rely on men as providers their filter for selection becomes more physical leaving many men resentful.

Hope you look into this further, Emil. I know I would listen to a 30+ min article on this topic from you for sure.

Very interesting

Women consistently rate high testosterone men as more attractive than low testosterone men.
EXCEPT when they're on birth control, which literally warps women's minds and completely changes their preferences
