I have admittedly a poor understanding of the British school system. A better one of the U.S. For years here there has been a steady “grade inflation” in what we term, the “public” school system. Indeed, there have been efforts at our most prestigious institutions, e.g., Harvard, to reduce percentages of “A’s” given out to students. (We all can’t be “A” students, can we?).
It is little better in the primary and secondary schools, such that a student’s grades these days are meaningless—especially found in our inner city schools with large minority student populations. This has been going on or getting worse for years. I personally have encountered (minority) college students admitted who could barely write their name on an essay paper, nor complete a single cogent paragraph in the assigned subject.
Indeed, schools that have ignored independent standardized tests like the SAT in admissions are said to be moving back to such out of desperation. Could it be that government pressure to show minority student improvement has made locally created and administered achievement tests meaningless?
Count you be experiencing a “ceiling effect” in the tests you are comparing to IQ (as measured by other testing)?
The GCSEs are national exams, marked externally. A ceiling effect can't explain why White British score lower than ethnic minorities. And as mentioned in the article, the effect is concentrated at the low end of SES, where scores are lower.
OK. But I still have problems with why Chanda Chisala comes to such conclusion (hereditarian theory false) when there is a raft of data from U.S. studies involving our minorities which is consistent across many years. And yes, I know that Chanda Chisala is a long time notorious apologist for the environmentalist position. It seems to me however, race differences in IQ is not a phenomenon unique to any particular locale or country.
Regarding the point about IQ improving for certain groups over time — I remember looking at a study that showed that 2nd gen Indian migrants had considerably higher IQ than first gen.
A slightly older study, I believe. Maybe around 2010.

There is a bell curve in each ethnic group so there will be some blacks that perform better than some Chinese or whites. We have to refocus on the individual and ignore the ethnic group from which that individual comes. It was the proponents of bean counting by race or ethnicity that created this problem. As Cofnas has pointed out, under any regime there will be black professors at Harvard, just fewer of them. Using Harvard’s own research. It’s really only in academia that people care about it.

I took it seriously in grade 12 and scored in the 98th percentile. Worst mistake I ever made. They acted like I was Einstein and it made them look bad because I was bored by school.
