Twitter thread by Ryan Burge. Using data from the General Social Survey, Ryan Burge tracks change in the percentage of people in different US birth cohorts who believe in God and have no doubts. He finds that among those born before 1945 (the Silent Generation) 70% still believe in God, but among those born after 1997 (Generation Z), only 33% still believe in God.
Evolutionary origins of stigmatization: The functions of social exclusion. In a classic article from 2001, Robert Kurzban and Mark Leary put forward an evolutionary account of social stigma. They argue that stigma is motivated by three relatively distinct psychological systems: one designed for avoiding poor social exchange partners; one designed for excluding individuals from coalitions; and one designed for avoid pathogen carriers.
Origin of Sex-Biased Mental Disorders: Do Males and Females Experience Different Selective Regimes? Michelle Brown and colleagues provide an evolutionary framework for explaining sex differences in the frequencies of mental disorders. Their framework invokes sexual selection and sex hormones, as well as psycho-social stress. They argue that women have higher rates of depression, anxiety and PTSD because they are more susceptible to stress.
