Housing and Fertility. Dimas Fazio and colleagues examine the impact of access to housing on fertility. Analysing variation in access induced by credit lotteries in Brazil, they find that obtaining housing increases the probability of having a child by up to 33%. The effect is concentrated among 20–25 year olds (there is no increase in the probability of having a child for those older than 40) and is stronger for lower income households.
Parents’ effective time endowment and divorce: Evidence from extended school days. María Padilla-Romo and colleagues examine how policies that extend the school day affect family dynamics. Exploiting the staggered adoption of a policy that extended school days in Mexico, they find that it led to a significant rise in divorce rates. The rise appears to be driven by women spending less time on childcare and subsequently entering the workforce.
